Good-bye January, Hello February!

If you are a reader of my blog (and by reader I mean you skim over it every now and then--I wouldn't expect you to read every word!) you will remember my Happiness Project post outlining my monthly goals for the year.
What I worked on for January was finances.
How did I do?
Well, pretty good!
I must admit, there are a few coffee shops that own a large chunk of my wallet, and I'm working on that, but all in all, the month went well.
I do think watching my finances so tightly actually made the month go slower, but it was really good to finally see some money saving up. There is still a lot of room for improvement, but the project is great!

February is my knowledge month.
A few of my goals include:

Read a book a week (I'm currently working on "the Help" and will move on to something else from my stash of books once I'm done).
Read the news everyday and keep up to date with what's going on in the world, especially with politics.
Learn more about the people I know. Ask questions, spend time, and enjoy the company.
Along the way, find something new! It's been too long since my interest was really sparked by something I had never learned about.

I'll let you know how it goes!

Fears

I don't know about you, but when asked what my greatest fears are, I never have an answer!

For some odd reason I've been thinking about this and I have finally decided on my top 3 fears.

In advance, you have the right to call me absolutely silly for them.

Someone said they're more of pet peeves, but no. They are fears.

Also, I am afraid of things like kidnap or losing the people I love, but these are the more materialistic fears, if you will.

1. Natural disasters

My sister used to watch TV shows about tornadoes all the time! She wanted to see one more than anything, and knew it freaked me out. Hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires--they are so beyond our control and have always made me anxious.

2. Spiders
I am not even going to post a picture of a spider. They make me cringe, and scream, and weak at the knees...Yikes! You can read my lovely story about being trapped in a car with a spider here.

3. Potato eyes

Go ahead--laugh! This is another one I really didn't want to look at, so enjoy the comic. Either way, you know when a potato has been sitting out for a while and it starts to grow roots off of it termed "eyes." Yeah, those make me sick.

I am a fool, I know, but we all have something silly that frightens us, right?

I just finished reading "Me" by Ricky Martin.

When I tell people what I'm reading, they respond with:

"I never was much of a Ricky Martin fan."

First, if we're talking music, I think we all have to admit to dancing our little hearts away to "Livin' La Via Loca" and wishing we could be on that stage with him.

As a person, however, I admire this man so much.

Maybe it took reading his own words to understand just how great and humble he is.

Regardless, I am so happy to know a piece of his story.

The book opens with the following quote--one I am surprised I have never heard before,

yet am I moved by every word of it:

I am a silly person.

Not only do I slip sarcasm into nearly every conversation I have,

but I also tend to laugh in the most serious of situations.

What I have learned, however, is that is helps.

When someone is down, putting a smile on their face is the only way of mending, no matter how temporary it may be.

As one of my best friends says: "Laughter is an instant vacation."

Now as much as I want to post a blog about being silly...well, I don't.

Instead, I'd love to make a point that I also tend to be passionate.

For example, I am passionate about how adorable my little brother is!

Likewise, I am passionate about life.

Learning

This could obviously cover a whole span of topics, but all in all, I love that thrill I get when I've found a topic of discussion that I actually have an opinion on. Whether it's a debate or simply exchanging ideas, I thrive on the thoughts that can be provoked. With school starting back up, I am excited to find myself engulfed in studies once again.

Music

My collection of music is constantly growing. Someday I will actually listen to it all ;) Regardless, music has always been one of the most important parts of my daily life. No matter my emotions, I have songs to match them. Not only do great lyrics and music help, but making music is what really gives me the passionate drive. Sit me down to a drum set and I am on top of the world!

Diversity/Culture

I know, nearly everybody has the desire to travel, but who can blame them?

It's so fascinating to learn about the different parts of the world, and open up to what others

have to offer! Who knows what we can learn? Not only do I want to live in a place where

everyone can be accepted and embraced for their differences, but I also want to explore the

what other cultures have to teach.

The Happiness Project

My best friend has been blogging about "the Happiness Project" for some time now,
and I never quite understood it until I saw an actual layout of what it entails.
Now, with the new year ahead of me, I am ready to make my own plan for 2012.
All in all, this will be a pathway to creating a better me.
That's what every day is for anyway, isn't it?

From my understanding of it, I will dedicate each month to working on one thing specifically in my life. You can see Ashley's layout --> here. Mine will be very similar. I guess we're both in that college student phase, huh?

My 2012 resolutions (AKA Happiness Project) for the year is as follows:

January: Finances - I need to get my budget together STAT, so this first month will be dedicated to just that.
February: Knowledge - Not only will my focus be on school, but I also plan on reading more books and becoming more politically aware for the upcoming election.
March: Spirituality
April: Work - Finals week will consume me, but I will plan on it going well...
May: Health - With school coming to an end, I will have more time to focus on exercise.
June: Adventure & Exploration - Perfect weather for hiking, traveling, and appreciating Mother Nature!
July: Service - I plan on getting out...be it China, Kenya, or just simply the animal shelter down the road, my time will be devoted.
August: Creativity - I'll attend the Utah Arts Festival in June, give myself a month to gather my thoughts, then let it all out! Art, music, writing--everything!
September: Involvement - School clubs, presentations, volunteering, the works.
October: ??? I am at a blank. Help me?
November: Family & Friends - I can obviously wait a whole year for this ;) Nah, just a good time to be grateful for them and make the best of my relationships .
December: Change - After all is said and done, I will evaluate and balance things out as needed.

I of course intend on working on all of these at all times throughout the year. Just because I have health assigned to May certainly does not mean that I am going to sit on my butt for 5 months ;) Regardless, I look forward to this experience.

You know,

I'm not really one for trying to draw major attention on specific aspects of who I am,

but by saying that, I'm already lying.

Really, I'd be a hypocrite if I just left it at that.

So, here I am, sharing something I feel is absolutely necessary.

I am gay.

At this point in my life, I am out about it.

This isn't necessarily some revolutionary blog post that is going to lead to a phone call from my mom and a million "no way"s across BYU-town (AKA Provo).

But, for the long haul, I think it's best if I just get this out of the way now.

To begin, I don't want to feel like I need to justify myself.

This isn't some "oh, she's just never had experience with the right men" debate.

(On a quick side note, my blog might actually take a turn after this--for the better, of course. I will be far more open and might add my thoughts on things to more of an extent).

Still, it has been such a difficult thing. Beyond hard at times, really.

It's been a struggle, it's been my downfall, and for the longest time, it ate away at me.

Why do I have these feelings for a girl?

This isn't right, this isn't healthy.

You need to get rid of this.

Throughout junior high, when it became more clear to me, my mind was flooded with these thoughts.

One other huge things that makes this so tough is religion.

I was raised LDS, and I have utmost respect for it.

Nowhere within the church do I think I am a shame or disgrace.

I believe in God, I believe in the great comfort that comes from that church, and frankly, I don't think I could have made it through high school without that to cling to.

Regardless, I have chosen a lifestyle outside of it.

(I know that is the hardest part for my family to read, as well as to handle. I am only 19, I do make a lot of silly mistakes, but of one thing I am certain: this is who I am, and I know this is what makes me happy...as for the rest, I am always striving to be the best person I can be. Really).

I feel like that kind of sums it all up right there.

I've known this for years, and looking back, I do feel like it's always been a part of me.

I don't love women because they're not men,

I love women because they are women.

I hope this doesn't make anyone weak to their stomach,

and above all, I don't want it to change how people see me.

Some of my "friends" stopped talking to me after I told them, despite knowing me for years.

This hurts, because I do know that I am so much more than just gay, but to those who treat me just the same, and have been able to just have a good time without being weird about it, I am forever grateful.

Also, I am grateful for my loving parents, sisters, and grandparents who still hold to their beliefs, but also give me relentless love.

Without love and support, I can't imagine where I'd be.

All in all, this is just something I think I need to share.

It's a weight off of my shoulders by putting it out there.

I thank you for your time in reading this.

Please know know that I do stand up for my feelings and beliefs.

These are feelings I know to be beautiful.

I want the same happy, successful, and fulfilling life I know we all have the potential to live.

There are many mixed opinions on this, but to me, I am a daughter, I am a musician, I am a friend, I want to be a doctor, I am an adventure-seeker, I am a blogger, I am Quincy. Yes, I am gay...but isn't that just petty compared to the rest?

Road Rage

Ladies and gentlemen,

I have a terrible confession to make.

Although I am sure you've been reading the blog of a very patient,

kind-hearted girl (please please PLEASE catch my sarcasm,)

I must admit to something:

I have road rage.

Am I proud?

No.

But am I justified?

Well, I would like to think I am a damn good driver,

and perhaps the state I live in contributes to the rage,

but to answer that...YES!

Let me tell you just what grinds my gears on the roads:

1. Drivers who do not use their signal light

This is one thing I just do NOT. Get. Is your left handle physically incapable of moving down two inches to help me notify that you are going to be entering my lane last minute? Better yet, when I am turning and sneak past you on the right, then you feel the right to honk at me, I say "eff you!" Had your signal light been on, I wouldn't have done it. This is one thing that is better safe than sorry, people. I signal out of parking stalls, for Pete's sake.

2. Drivers who insist on being one car ahead

Because in the end, we will all just end up at the same red light! Driving is not a race, nor is it a game. People have the need to swerve all over the freeway, speed up and slow down, and in my opinion, just make fools of themselves to be a few cars ahead. 90% of the time, I end up right next to them once we're off the freeway...

3. Drivers who are so safe they're dangerous

I've only actually been the passenger in this situation, and it is disastrous. Every turn is taken at 0.5 MPH and all stops begin a half a mile before the light. Then you mention something and they get defensive, saying they're the only safe driver on the road...I don't think so. If you don't drive with balls, you shouldn't be driving at all.

4. Drivers who think they're the only ones on the road

Specifically in the parking lot...if I have to hold my breath to get in my car, it's clear that someone has parked WAY too close. People are very inconsiderate, and I do recognize that my blogging this post isn't too friendly, but still.

I have never flipped someone off while driving,

nor have I given any nasty looks,

so I really don't feel too terrible in coaching the driving behaviors of, as my mom would call them, clown masters.

What bugs you most about drivers?
Also, if you have any classy names to call them, I'd love to hear.

Pre-Resolutions

I've never been one for setting New Years Resolutions,

simply because I know I suck at following through with them.

You get yourself all prepared and excited for a year of change--

One where your life takes a 180,

and the old you is magically swept clean when midnight hits.

For the first week of the new year,

you are on top of life.

Not only does the actual 1 pound you've lost feel like 10 pounds,

but you are also determined to conquer every bad thing that happened to you.

By week three, things are still going well, but reality begins to kick in,

and by February, you're just a lost cause.

Well, this year I thought I'd get a bit more prepared with some simpler resolutions,

but ones that I know are necessary and I am capable of fulfilling.

Enjoy:

Drink the "required" amount of water each day (I used a calculator online and it determined about 2.7 ounces. I figure carrying my oversized water bottle around will do the job).
Read more! I'd love to say one book a week, but to be safe, we'll stick with one a month.
Better manage my time and my finances. These are things you really wouldn't care to read about, but if you happen to run into me, ask me how I'm doing with it--I need the moral pressure.
Spend more time with my family--I don't live at home, and my busy life makes it difficult, but I know it need it.

Well, as pathetic as it is, that's about all I have managed to come up with, folks!

Simple, but possible.

Come January, I think I'll be ready.

Welcome to My Wall

For three years now,

I have had my life changed every Monday night at

Canary Garden: A Center for Grieving Families.

It all started with a phenomenal teacher and my best friend.

I have worked with "the Littles," a group of 3-5 year olds whose loved ones have died.

From a sister who died in a car accident to a father who died from a "bloody brain," we all gather to share our stories, relate with one another, and even have fun letting all of our energy out in a ball room.

(I've shared more about the love felt --> here && here)

Friends, I welcome you to my bedroom wall.

Several weeks ago we had an activity where we drew a picture of the one we lost and put a bandaid on the spot it hurts most.

Notice Wade's drawings, with little blue lines indicating his dad and grandparents flying up to heaven, along with the individual hearts he asked me to help him draw on their chests.

Not only is each drawing simply adorable, but they are also very touching.

These kids own a huge piece of my heart.

When it comes time to leaving them, I am so grateful for the time I have spent with them and the little ways they were able to lift me.

In one hour, everything in life seems to make sense to me.

Canary Garden puts things in perspective for me.

Of what really matters;

Of where our hearts should be set;

Of life's most precious gifts.

Stand Together (Against Bullying)

My best friend blogged basically the exact post here,

thus leading me to do the same,

along with having many of my coworkers do it,

and now hopefully leaving the impression with you.

Stand Together is an amazing organization,

uniting hundreds of thousands of people who all stand against bullying,

no matter the way, shape, or form.

In regards to its origin, the website states:

"Sirdeaner Walker, whose 11-year-old son died by suicide after experiencing bullying in school, has dedicated her life to ending bullying of all kinds, including bullying based on race, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or anything else that makes people different."

I have never experienced any major bullying firsthand,

but I know it's out there.

I've seen it through the vicious halls of jr. high,

and on the streets where I live.

Bullying can cause lifelong damage.

The more people who can come together and stand against it,

the more lives we will literally be saving.

I am number 95,850 to take this pledge.

This is my little brother.

Yes, I have talked about him before (-->here)

But the truth is, I could talk about him all day everyday.

Not only does he have the cutest angel face ever,

he is also the sweetest little boy EVER.

I can't imagine a more considerate and adorable child.

This year my parents helped him pick out some toys to donate for a toy drive.

Out of most kids, you would probably expect them to choose some petty little toys

like those you get from a McDonald's kid's meal (although I think my parents have done a good job at limiting those with him...)

No, no.

Not only did he pick out several significant toys without hesitation,

but he actually picked out a large fire engine that he asked for last year.

This kid knew that he would be giving these toys to boys and girls who don't get toys, and for that reason, he had no problem with giving them to them.

Below is a picture my mom sent me of him cleaning off the toys he was giving.

What do you do when that shows up in your inbox? (My answer: Break. Down.)

I have a hard time giving up a bite of my food when my sister asks to try it,

or donating an extra dollar when I'm already spending my money on something else.

How is it, then, that this child can be so sweet to just...give?

I know it's a goal everybody makes,

especially with the holiday season being the ideal timing,

but this year I really want to focus more on giving.

Sure, I love all the exciting tunes that you can dance around like a fool to,

I always try to get tickets to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas concerts.

Every year they have a guest artists, and every year I am blown away!

Of all their performances, this one touches me the most.

My conclusion of the moment:

Life is one big Jerry Springer episode.

We all have our crap that we have to deal with.

Whether our parents are divorced,

we're addicted to drugs,

or are in and out of the hospital on a monthly basis,

we all have a battle to fight.

Regardless, life is damn good.

Now that I got that out of the way,

let's get real.

I have never been one with great courage,

nor have I ever really stood up for myself over the years.

I am not necessarily a pushover,

but I've always just gone with the flow.

Lately I have been thinking about how great it feels to be confident in myself,

and like for once in my life, I am wearing my own skin.

I know that I am a beautiful person inside and out, and I have the potential to be anything I strive to be, so long as I work for it.

I am who I am, and the person I know to be me is unbelievably happy.

Many struggles and trials have lead me to be where I am,

but of course they have strengthened me every step of the way.

Right now, I am ready to fight.

Fight for a healthy lifestyle,

Fight for a successful future,

Fight for the ones that I love,

Fight for what I know is right,

and fight for a happy life.

Never in my life have I been so ready to take a stand, yet here I am.

I am me, and I am excited to enjoy

the past, the present, and the future.

As a sophomore in college, I thought I was done with using crayons and glue sticks for my projects. Well, after taking an Art 1010 class (just to get the dang credit out of the way) I learned otherwise. In fact, I got to make a collage!

I tied together this simply beautiful quote with images of my family members and friends (sorry if you're not included--I promise I still love you!) in the shape of a heart...probably the best project I've done in my life thus far.

This quote truly sums up what I think life is about -- others.

The tough part is then stepping away from ourselves and applying it.

Thanksgiving ABC's 2011

Well folks, it's that time of the year again! Last year I shared my Thanksgiving Alphabet (you can read it --> here) and as I was looking over it, I realized that a lot of the things I'd like to share this year are exactly the same. I guess I don't change much? But I guess I'll shoot for a more creative approach.

Attitude - and a positive one, at that! I love being surrounded by people who are optimistic and uplifting. Also, I feel like I have a naturally good attitude which helps me pull through the ugly days.

Books - if I could, I would read all day everyday. I am especially fond of non-fiction and irrelevant informational texts that really don't teach me anywhere, but they get me intrigued.

Crying - hopefully I'm not the oddest girl alive for being grateful for this! I went a long time without shedding a single tear, so it now just feels good to let it all out sometimes.

Dreams - it's nice to get lost in the heart's desires every now and again.

Eternal perspective - especially with the loss of my great-grandma this past year, I can't imagine life without knowing that my family will be together forever.

Friends - I really don't think this one will change as the years pass. From the new ones to the old ones, the great memories will never end.

Grief counseling - it's been a while since I shared anything about my kids at Canary Garden, but the opportunity I have to be lifted by their amazing spirits every week is something words cannot describe.

Hearts - to be alive with a beating heart is wonderful :) On top of that, knowing people with such warm hearts makes life that much better.

In-N-Out - I had to throw that out at some point!

Jokes - for those of you who don't know me, I am a terribly sarcastic person. Along with that, I turn everything into a joke. I am constantly laughing, but it is an instant vacation afterall.

Kissing - no questions asked!

Luxuries - this is my umbrella way of covering the roof over my head, the clothes I wear, the food I eat, and every other thing that so many people don't ever get the chance to receive.

Music - I've said it before, I'll say it again. I don't think I can go a day without listening to my music. I need to make more music...

Nutrition - not that I fulfill a healthy lifestyle, but it always feel great to just be nutritious and in control of how my body feels.

Options - can you imagine a life with only one path and one way? I love the variety of choices.

Peace - life is often too chaotic to feel this lovely feeling, but when everything is at peace...I think we're complete.

Que veux tu - this is a French song I could play all day long, as well as dance along to the music video by the stunning Yelle. Watch it --> here. Oh, and it translates to "what do you want?" which can be pretty sexy, I must say.

Random "things" - there's nothing like a little spontaneity in life!

Scholarships - this sounds selfish, but because I am such a tight wad, I would be a lost cause if I had to pay for my school (heaven forbid!)

Talents - we are all good at something. I am extremely grateful for the things I know I am good at. Not only does it give me the opportunity to bond with others, but also to feel confidence in myself.

UVU - the great school I go to! It's a place of diversity and wonderful opportunities. All in all, I love education.

Vivint - having a job is a must for me, not only to have an extra dollar or two, but also to remain sane. I could talk about security systems all day long, as well as the slightly psychotic people I deal with.

Writing - ever since I was a wee little lass (no, I really don't talk like that, but I just felt the need...), I've wanted to write a book. I love writing lyrics, random bits and pieces, and just--writing!

Xiphoid process - ha! I really have no reason for this, except for it being a part of human anatomy, and I love studying anatomy, despite being in a beast of a class for it.

Youth - I never want to get old (wow, I really jumped to saying that, didn't I?) I know my personality won't age much, but for now I need to take advantage and take the best care of my young body!

Z - I've been sitting here trying to come up with words that start with "z" to the point that I'm coming up with things that don't exist! I am thankful for Z. How touching.

Lessons of (Graveyard) Work

Although it might seem like a demotion (my paycheck says otherwise...) I was recently offered the position of a graveyard supervisor at my work. From 10pm-6am I supervise the call center for both customer and technical support, and let me tell you--I love it!

With this change, I have been noticing a few things about myself, as well as learning a lesson or two...

You know that lovely feeling of catching your "second winds?" My body goes through the same cycle every night. Between 10 and midnight, I'm steady chilling at a regular level of energy, although sleep does sound nice. Between 12 and 2am, I find a random burst of energy within my soul, and all I want to do is walk around, talk, and be busy. After this point, things kind of drop. Once I am off at 6am, my head tells me it's time to get sleep, but my body tells me I need to keep pushing through the day. What. the. hell? I plan on controlling this urge to not sleep, but isn't it interesting how our bodies are capable of pulling through such a large lack of sleep?

One thing I have always been is an OCD priss with organization. Tonight, for example, I went through every email account I have ever had and created specific folders to divide the emails in to. Along with this, I put together ways for my employees to keep organized. This is a great thing, no doubt, but also an interesting way of spending time when it's 4 o'clock in the morning.

I have a testimony of caffeine. I know this is a terrible thing, and I can assure you that I am not addicted, but when there are rows of Red Bulls just awaiting your $2.50 in the vending machines, and it's all you can do to remain sane, you do what you have to do.

Lastly, working a graveyard shift is a constant game of deprivation. Before I explain, I would like to say that's I'm still living a perfectly healthy life, getting my tasks done. If you're not doing your homework, you're sleeping. If you're not sleeping, you're excercising or eating. If you're not taking care of those basic needs, you're at school by 7 in the morning to take a quiz.

With time, I think I will perfect this foolery which is a graveyard shift. Tonight, however, I am doing some head bobbing and in serious need of a break from school. Oh, speaking of which, have a great Thanksgiving!

Self Value

Prepare for an absolutely random gathering of thoughts--I'll try to keep it simple.

First, I would like to say how grateful I am for being raised in the home I was raised in. My mom taught all of us a lot of great lessons, one of which was modesty. Nothing is sexier than classiness, and I'd say modesty is a part of that. Along with this comes self value, and knowing what I'm worth. I think religion played a large role in that, but when it all comes down to it, I feel comfortable in my skin, with who I am, and that makes me happy.

Speaking of self value, I found this the other day:

In music, when an ensemble is scored on their performance it is based on a scale from 1-5, 1 being the best, 5 being the worst. I was involved with every possible ensemble in high school, from marching band to jazz band. At one of the competitions a judge gave the band an average score, but he also left this simple notation: "Drummer gets a 1." Who was that drummer? Well...whose blog is this?

As for another random thought, I've begun working the graveyard shift at my work, supervising customer and technical support. In fact, I am currently working, AND blogging (it's just that good.)

I've find my life being very simple,

but almost too much! In fact, it's just been boring.

Aside from some unnecessary drama, there isn't much going on.

Regardless, I need to be grateful.

Above all, I think just knowing that life is good is always something to hold on to, even if I did just spend $1000+ on my car and am doing average in my classes.

Oh, Neighbors

OK, folks, I have a topic of discussion that I know everyone can relate to.

Colten and I have some neighbors that cease to blow us away.

First, let me describe our place.

It's an old house that was has been added on to, thus creating two upstairs apartments and two downstairs apartments.

Colten and I are upstairs, and the neighbors across from us are frequently smoking doobies and making "get high music." They aren't even the bad neighbors, though!

Below us are...oh, I don't know, sometimes two girls, another time a girl and a guy, and sometimes quite the variation of both.

We really aren't loud upstairs,

but of course we talk and will listen to music.

Still, we are perfectly respectful and contain our volume.

One evening, around 11pm, we were assembling some new furniture, minding our own business, when we not only heard but felt a pounding beneath our feet.

Yep, the people below us were pounding on the their ceiling, letting us know that we were being loud and needed to stop.

Being the stubborn souls that we are, we did get quieter, but continued putting the parts together. Once again, a bang on our floor.

Seriously, people?

We are grown adults and you're going to pound on the ceiling to communicate with us?

I don't know if they're using a broom or chucking a bowling ball at the ceiling, but either way, it's so obnoxious!

Now you're probably thinking, "duh, Quincy, just don't make noise that late at night."

No, no.

I will have you know that these people are up in the wee hours of the morning blasting their TV, having people over, and making a ridiculous amount of noise!

I'm not kidding you--two o'clock in the morning and I can hear every word of their conversation.

I woke up at 4:30am for work on Sunday and they were just having a ball down there.

So let's think about this...

Colten and I make some noise at 11pm and they pound on the ceiling.

I wake up at 4:30 in the morning and they are partying.

Hm, seems like a logical reason for them to get after us, right?

Last night they made their first humane attempt at communicating with us.

Yes, I will admit that I was a bit hyperactive and talking loud at midnight,

but when she pounds on are door and says "I'm sleeping, can you try to keep it down?" I just want to respond with "I'll try, but I can't make any promises...oh, speaking of which, let's talk about YOUR sound level."

Anyway, they are fools, and that is all.

I shouldn't fear accidentally dropping something in the evening,

or even sneezing, at that.

I Want Short Hair

I was born strawberry blonde but my hair color is now questionable.

Regardless, I do like my hair,

BUT I want short hair!

Like, a cute pixie cut.

Since it's curly, could I pull it off?

I love the thought of waking up in the morning and doing my hair in 5 minutes.

Ode to College Couples

This is my ode to those "lovers" I see every day at school.

From the ones who just hold hands down the hall,

or those who lie in each other's laps and just wreak of corny passion,

it is simply uncalled for.

My only acceptance of the college couples is those who are married,

and contain their level of showing love for each other.

But even then, they're so locked up in their beautiful little world,

and it's not like I'm thinking "why cant it be me??"

NO, they're just the epitome of fools.

My belief is that half of them only met two weeks ago,

yet here they are, just drowning in each other.

Maybe it's because I am in the heart of Utah?

Either way, it drives me bonkers!

If you're socially acceptable about it,

fine (and this is very rare).

As for the rest,

they need to calm. down.

Motivation

Please bear with me on this one, although I promise to try to make it good.

So, topic of discussion:

Motivation.

Where does it come from?

For me, I don't even know!

When I go running, I can't imagine "my life on the line," or the person I love being at the end of the run, because let's be real, that is not true.

Even when I watch what I eat or dedicate myself to daily exercise, the thought of looking good in those jeans staring me down in my closet just doesn't cut.

Some people are self motivated, just at their own will,

and others need some incentive.

I think there are obvious pros and cons to both,

but as long as your reach your goal, so be it.

As for my motivation, I'm still figuring it out.

Pathetically enough, a lot of the time I have to learn a lesson by doing the wrong thing before I actually find the motivation to do something about it.

Whether it's sleeping in for class and missing an important quiz

(no, mom, that hasn't really happened...yet)

or actually acting on something that is highly discouraged for integrity's sake,

the bitter feeling after doing that pushes me to not do it again.

I'm not the only one on that, right?

The greatest motivator, however, is a perspective on the long run.

I know what you're thinking. "Well DUH, Quincy."

The problem is, I forget about that long run far too much!

I want to go to medical school.

I want to travel around the world, experiencing the cultures and getting to know the people.

Why is it, then, that I allow my panties to get in a ruffle over petty little things?

As tough as things might get today,

I need to remember that there is tomorrow.

Better yet, there is the success of my future.

Life is for living.

Along with that comes learning and enjoying every minute of it.

I'm interested, where does your motivation originate?

Facing My Fears

Folks, I had the scariest experience of my entire life this morning.

Seriously, I am still shaken up about it.

First, I was stuck in stop-and-go traffic on the freeway.

A trip that usually takes me 15 minutes took me an hour,

thus making me miss my first class.

I decided not to get too peeved about this, however, because there's not much I can do to control that.

So there I was, just minding my business, rocking out to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and moving 0.2 miles an hour when I notice some small movement by my side.

My heart immediately skipped a beat as a nasty, putrid, disgusting (get the point?) spider crawled up my door and up by my dashboard. In a panic, I kept a close eye on it as it hid away in my vent.

I took great precaution at this point, acknowledging the fact that my absolute worst fear was roaming in the car with me.

Really, people, I wanted to pee my pants.

I can hold snakes, I will jump off of waterfalls, and I can handle stage-fright.

But when it comes to spiders...good heavens, I lose my mind!

(I wonder if that's genetic because my mom and I both scream bloody-murder and jump on the couch if we see a tiny spider from across the room...)

Anyway, my heart had calmed down a bit when the spider has the audacity to come out of the passenger side vent!

Of course, it crawled right in my direction, and eventually ended up right over my leg!

I was light headed.

I was weak.

I was going to die.

As it crawled underneath me, literally an inch away from my leg, it eventually spun a dirty little web down to the floor right by my feet.

Now the most ridiculous thing about this fear of mine is that I fear killing it, too! So sweet heavens, I can't even fix my problem.

At this point, I was ready to just pull over and throw up.

Can you just imagine the scene as I hauled out of my car, screaming, and just...chucking things at my car? Amusing, no doubt.

I am almost rear-ended the car in front of me trying to maintain myself.

My car is a stick shift, so it really didn't add to the incident.

I eventually pulled into my school,

got out of my car,

and shook my whole body in fear that the bastard crawled on me.

I don't even want to drive home.

Walking is worth avoiding that spider.

Now this may be completely irrational,

but I know I am not the only one with this fear!

I fear that I have lost a lot of my enthusiasm towards life.

The only reason I care to share this is because the reasoning behind it is unreal!

It's an eye-opener, but also very sad to think about how uninformed we are when it comes to other beliefs.

Mormonism is not a cult,

All Settled In

I have been living on my own since April (yes, what a great achievement!)

My first place was...well...it worked.

You can see bits and pieces here.

However, I have lived in a new place for just over a month with one of my best friends from high school, and I love it!

Let's take a virtual tour, shall we?

First, I have a cool accent wall and a bed that doesn't creak

every time I breathe like the previous one.

It may appear as if I have a heap of junk rocking this desk,

but I can assure you that my OCD nature holds it together well :)

My lovely "music corner" and floor space--I actually have room to live!

So I don't have a "theme," considering one wall has the Eiffel Tower and the other has Chinese calligraphy.

I promise the carpet isn't as bad and pink as it may appear.

I really love living here.

This is one of those.

Tonight I was living the American dream by eating at

the wonderful Golden Corral buffet.

As I sat down to my deep fried everything and three plates of dessert,

a voice on the intercom said: "Bill, please come to the front register."

A large, husky man stood up and headed the right direction, but was met halfway with an employee holding a work phone out to him.

"You're Bill, right? Your wife is trying to contact you."

He handed Bill the phone and headed back to the register.

I was absolutely dumb-founded.

Bill's wife knew JUST where to find him on a Wednesday night

when he wasn't home from work yet.

What better to do than increase the risk of a heart attack and cake on the weight?

After MY five plates of nonsense, I'd call this a successful evening.

On With My Life!

Since I've been missing in action all summer long,

I figured I'd give a lovely little update,

especially with school starting in less than a week (still not sure how I feel about it...)

My summer hasn't been nearly as full as those in the past,

although I have enjoyed it just the same.

First, I moved out in April!

At the same time, I started my new job at vivint. and absolutely love it--

I have been and will continue working 40+ hours a week.

And...that's about it!

JUST kidding, I did enjoy time with my family and friends:

Vegas!

I celebrated my birthday just over a week ago by spending the weekend in Las Vegas with Ashley and Ashley, two of my closest friends.

(They got home from Kenya just a couple weeks before--to read about their adventures, check out Living the Dream.)

Everyone assumed I was turning 21 because of the trip,

but I am still a young'n, only 19.

Regardless, we enjoyed our nights on the Strip,

as well as "Phantom" and Cirque du Soleil's "Ka."

My summer really has been filled with working,

but I know I needed it! I have enjoyed it :)

Onward to my sophomore year of college!

A Thought Or Two

I really have not posted nearly enough lately,

and while I could find one specific topic to go into or make fun of

('cause that's just how I do)

I think I will just stick with sharing some of the thoughts that have been in my head lately.

First off, pet peeves. The more I am around certain people, the more I recognize what pushes my buttons. Is it therefore bad to expose myself to that? Or is that a lesson of patience?

When people "grind my gears," I probably let it affect me for more than I should, but I can't help how absolutely OCD and punctual of a person I am...can I?

I really am quite patient,

but my goodness, sometimes things really take far more effort than I feel necessary.

(Now I just sound--nasty!)

Second, who decides what is and is not socially acceptable?

We obviously make the judgment through our own eyes,

but where did our ideas come from?

I know that in my own life, the vast majority is from the way I've been raised,

so I am assuming most people just do the things they do because of their home and family situations,

but seriously, whose mother ever taught them it's OK to flip someone off when they pull out in front of them?

Whose dad said it would be good for them to yell ridiculous nonsense out of a car window?

I just cannot quite grasp all of the things people do,

BUT, I guess I am probably the prime example of "socially unacceptable" through some eyes, so who am I to say?

Last, but certainly not least: Prayer.

Except for those with absolute certain and admirable faith,

I am sure the best of us (or those who believe in God, at least)

doubt God at some point in our lives--at least I hope it's not just me.

Not necessarily his existence, but just Him.

The other day I was thinking...

What is the first thing I do when I hear about a young child being kidnapped?

Pray.

What does the world do when disaster strikes?

Pray.

For heavens sake, what is the first thing I do when I'm headed to the testing center?

Pray.

To me, that is the comfort I need, and that keeps me holding on.

Last night (or this morning, rather) as I was leaving work at 12:30am,

I realized something:

I am a workaholic.

The day before, I worked from 1:30pm to 1:30am,

and I worked every day before that.

Also, even though today is my day off,

I have been checking my work email every few hours.

It might have to do with the promotion I received on Monday! (woohoo!)

OR it might be the money I get for working overtime...

Regardless, I love work.

I know to take time for myself,

and I certainly do,

but it is official that I love my job.

Friends, I have a serious confession.

First of all, have you ever had In-N-Out?

Over the past few years Utah has been lucky enough to receive several In-N-Out restaurants, two of which I have put to extreme use.

When I place my order, as pathetic as this seems, most of the workers know my name, and know exactly what I want.

Veggie burger, animal style, extra everything.

Looking at my bank statements, every other transaction is with In-N-Out.

meet one of my absolute best friends, the beautiful Ashley Earp.

I'm usually not one to ode public displays for specific people in my life,

but seriously, I love this girl.

In several hours, she and Ashley (the other lovely girl in this photo) will be flying to Kenya for one month to serve the women and children of this country.

Yes, at one point it was going to be me and Ashley,

but I cannot even begin to say how excited I am for these two.

The three of us--could there be 3 cuter girls?

Yesterday I had quite the phone call at work.
Although I am used to dealing with a variety of people's issues,
never in my life have I spoken with such a disrespectful human-being
with a total lack of courtesy and chivalry.
To make a long story short, he was bickering at me for something completely irrational, explaining how my company had "cheated him" and "broken our agreement with him," and for something that was completely ridiculous.
Aside from all of the beautiful remarks he had for my company, the last thing he said to me was "go get your f***ing supervisor, I'm sick of talking to you, you dumb b****."

And then the tears came.

Ha, no really, I cried a little bit because I was just so blown away by him.
I cannot imagine how a grown man, sitting right next to his wife,
could call me something so...sickening!

I know I'm not a dumb bitch, but seriously, how can someone behave that way??

This was yet another experience that reminded me of the respect I want to give to everyone, no matter how upset I might be about a situation or how they are treating me--just be kind.

(Kudos to whoever can guess which state he was from! Mom, you don't count.)

I've been working at my new job for a month and half...

School starts in two months.

Although I miss it terribly, I cannot decide if that's a good or a bad thing.

I've posted 6 posts over the past month.

Not too bad, I guess, but still...if you knew the simple life I live, you'd wonder what in the world has been keeping me!

At my work, if a customer calls in to give positive feedback for one of the representatives they spoke with on the phone, an email is sent out to everyone to congratulate that representative. Tonight this went around:

[Customer] wanted to let me know how great of a job Quincy did. She told me that she is so Kind, so understanding, and so willing to help. She told me that Quincy is 1 in a Million. Paula just Appreciates what she is doing for her customers. She said she was a pleasure to work with. She wanted everyone here to congratulate Quincy on being the best.

This isn't me trying to boast at all, just saying how much that made my evening.

Today at work I took a phone call from a man in Hawaii wishing to cancel his service with us. Now in most situations such as this, I pull up my big girl pants and get prepared for an unpleasant shpeal from the customer, but this case was quite different. In fact, not only was he extremely friendly to me from the very beginning, but he actually ended up inviting me to stay with his family in Hawaii.

A vacation to this paradise? I think so!

Not only that, he also offered to hook me up with surf lessons, motorcycle rides through the mountains, beach BBQ's, and basically every other courteous thing I never would have expected from anyone I know!

Moral of the story:

Not only are Hawaiians officially the kindest people ever,

but it's also so amazing to me how much brighter my evening was because of this simple kindness.

I obviously don't expect every old lady to invite me into her home for cookies, tea, and a warm fireplace (in fact, that's kind of creepy) but a soft heart truly makes the world of a difference.

As for that trip to Hawaii,

I'll be booking my flight soon!

Yes, I am alive!

In fact, I really don't think I've ever been better.

Aside from an occasional homesick feeling,

life is absolutely wonderful.

Updates?

Well, my days consist of sleeping, running, working, and repeating (with a meal here or there...just kidding, Mom, I do eat!)

I am working for Vivint. and can I tell you I absolutely love it?

Sure, working in a call center wasn't exactly what I planned on,

especially when I'm just begging for a job in a hospital,

but it really is a nice job.

Amazing coworkers, chill environment--I dig it.

In other news,

I might be training for a marathon?

Might because when I started running a lot

I realized just how large my womanly endowments (AKA boobs) are, and yowch, that makes things tricky, plus my mental game just isn't quite caught up to the level of 26.2 miles.

Either way, getting in shape is lovely,

although I am waiting for the weather to clear up so I can go hiking!

Really, there isn't much else.

I miss school.

Life is simple, life is good.

This is simply one of those posts where I share the most ridiculous experiences of my life

I don't know about your family, but mine has an interesting mood after funerals.
For example, after my great grandpa passed away, my cousins did not hesitate

to move on to blue darting.

(If you don't know what this is, let's just say you need a lighter and some good gas flowing through your body...I've seen that flame hit the ceiling!)

Well, as we were driving home from the dedication of my great grandma's grave on Saturday,

we passed a lovely little PT Cruiser with "Headed to Montana" painted on the back window, and none other than a girl holding up a sign that said BOOBS.

Of course my young cousins found endless humor in this,

but I was really quite dumb founded.

What in the world?

I do not know if she was requesting anything,
or if she simply wanted to state her thoughts.

I just don't understand.

It's days like today that I am so grateful for my family's faith.

Sure, I could have been raised with any religion, or no religion at all,

but it's that faith in an eternal life that brought so much peace

this past week as my grandma slowly passed away.

It's interesting that despite working with bereaving families every week,

handling death in my own family was a completely different story.

Obviously it's a closer relation,

but isn't it interesting, the thoughts that go through your mind

as you say your goodbyes?

But I know it's not forever.

Balanced Life (or Lack Thereof)

I've been thinking about all the many aspects of life (but let's face it, when aren't I?)

Religion, family, work, education, friends, dating, hobbies--the list goes on.

Where does the happy balance fall into place?

I do feel like I've been weary on where I stand lately. Sure, I have my beliefs, but have I really been practicing them? Do people know that I do have morals and a foundation in life? It all leads back down to "actions speak louder than words."

I am pulling my pieces back together, and I am very happy for it.

I have found so many great things in life, and really look forward to all the possibilities!

Why dwell on the things that aren't happening for me right now?

I want to make the best of this time.

With my great grandma passing away very soon,

and another loved one suffering a terrible disease (CJD),

my priorities are clear, and I want to do something about it.

That's my rant for the week :) Thank you.
